Dr. Ana Karina Mascarenhas

Dr. Mascarenhas is the Associate Dean for Research at Nova Southeastern University, as well as a professor at the Nova College of Dental Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine. She received her BDS in 1985 from the Goa Dental College and Hospital in Goa, India. She went on to receive her MPH in 1992 and her DrPH in 1995 from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health, and has previously served as president of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. Further, she is the Director of the American Board of Dental PUblic Health, and as of 2012, has started her term as Commissioner at the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dr. Mascarenhas's primary areas of research lie in access to care and oral epidemiology. She is currently the principal investigator on an HRSA grant geared to develop a competent curriculum for dental and dental hygiene students in dental public health, and on a School Oral Health Initiative by the Children's Trust of Miami. Dr. Mascarenhas is both a member and a reviewer on the editorial boards of several journals. She has taught extensively, has published over 50 papers, and has presented both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Wendy Slusser

Dr. Wendy Slusser is Associate Vice Provost for the UCLA Healthy Campus Initiative, a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health at UCLA, and Co-Founder and Medical Director of the UCLA Fit for Healthy Weight program. Dr. Slusser graduated Cum Laude from Princeton University, received her Medical Degree from Columbia University and her Masters Degree from the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Dr. Slusser joined the UCLA faculty in 1996 and over the past 18 years has been a leader in community, school, clinic, and family based programs related to health promotion, infant and child nutrition, and physical fitness. She is currently the lead on the Healthy Campus Initiative and over the past two years, has led the nutrition pod for the Initiative. She is also the Principal Investigator on the Fit for LA Project that is focused on building the capacity of LAUSD school doctors, nurse practitioners and UCLA pediatric residents in the prevention and management of pediatric obesity. She is also involved in a big project focused on low-income preschool children and obesity prevention via parental education and involvement. She is currently finishing the production of the Our Food Chain Documentary in collaboration with LAUSD. Dr. Slusser is Board Certified in Pediatrics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has practiced and taught General Pediatrics and health promotion at the Venice Family Clinic for 19 years. She was selected to be a member of the Institute of Medicine committee called Obesity Prevention Policies for Young Children. She is the 2010 recipient of the Robert F. Allen Symbol of H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People through Empowerment) Award presented annually by the American Journal of Health Promotion to an individual who makes an outstanding contribution to serving the health promotion needs of underserved populations or to promoting cultural diversity within health promotion.

Dr. Michael Monopoli

Dr. Michael Monopoli is a 1981 graduate of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He received Master of Public Health and Master of Science degrees from the Harvard University School of Public Health in 1988. Dr. Monopoli also completed a fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Veterans Administration in 1990. Dr. Monopoli served as the dental director of the Office of Oral Health for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health from 1995-2001. Dr. Monopoli is presently the Director of Policy and Programs at the DentaQuest Foundation in Boston, MA. At the Foundation, Dr. Monopoli leads grant making activities, coordinates best evidence, community input, and various data sources on improving health outcomes, to design and manage strategies for the prevention of oral disease, health systems impact, and community-based solutions to oral health problems. Dr. Monopoli also works across the DentaQuest Enterprise and with external entities, including federal and state government agencies, academia, other health organizations, and community groups to establish, promote and provide support to partnerships and collaborations that can impact positive oral health policy nationally. Dr. Monopoli is currently the President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD).

Captain Renee Joskow

Dr. Joskow is a dentist and a medical epidemiologist and holds both a Doctor of Dental Surgery and a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University. She completed a hospital-based General Practice Residency at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey following which she was appointed to the faculty of Columbia University. During her tenure, Dr. Joskow maintained a private practice in New York and provided Quality Assurance/Quality Control consulting services for several healthcare entities in the NY, NJ, CT, Tri-State area. After 15 years in New York, Dr. Joskow joined the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) as a dental public health fellow after which she joined the National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer in Emerging Environmental Threats. As an EIS officer, Dr. Joskow applied her epidemiology skills and expertise in outbreak investigations, scientific research, and served in pivotal roles during the response to the 9/11 attacks and Anthrax investigations and the 2002 Olympics to name a few. Dr. Joskow subsequently moved to the Office of the Surgeon General, Department of Health and Human Services where she served as Medical Readiness Manager and Director of Training and Education for the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). She later joined the Chem/Bio Division, Science and Technology Directorate, in the Department of Homeland Security where she served as the Senior Medical Epidemiologist and Cooperative Agreements/Grants Program Manager. Subsequently, Dr. Joskow served as a Dental Research Officer and Program Official at the National Institutes of Health principally responsible for providing subject matter expertise, management and support for a multi-million dollar research portfolio to promote and accelerate the translation of scientific research discoveries into clinical practice and then community practice to improve health. Her responsibilities also included coordinating a national dental research consortium network for the National Center for Research Resources and overseeing the Clinical Translational Science Awards’ Consortium Coordinating Center.

Dr. Joskow now serves in the position of Senior Dental Advisor for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) where she provides leadership across HRSA on issues and activities related to oral health. She has also served as Chief of the Oral Health Training Branch in HRSA’s Division of Medicine and Dentistry and served as Chair of the PHS Dental Professional Advisory Committee.  Dr. Joskow is Board Certified in the specialty of Dental Public Health, a fellow in the American College of Dentists, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the New York Academy of Dentists. Dr. Joskow proudly holds the rank of Captain (O-6) in the U.S. Public Health Service.
