Dr. Kathryn Atchison, DDS, MPH
UCLA Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industry Relations
Kathryn A. Atchison is Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industry Relations at UCLA. Dr. Atchison was selected for this position through a search process after having served as Interim Vice Provost since January 2005. Dr. Atchison has led the transformation of the Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) by encouraging open communication with faculty, initiating a student internship program, and moving industry contracting into the OIP to enable better service to industry.
Dr. Atchison is a Professor in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry. A dental educator with 20 years of experience in public health and clinical and health services research, Dr. Atchison has extensive experience in research, teaching, research administration, and management of individual and institutional conflicts of interest. She is President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and a former participant in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.
Dr. Atchison formerly served as Associate Dean for Research & Knowledge Management at the UCLA School of Dentistry, where she catalyzed and facilitated the quadrupling of research funding from $2.5 million to more than $10 million. Dr. Atchison also developed strong participatory research programs for faculty and students, which resulted in growth of career development applications and RO1's.
She received her D.D.S. degree from the Marquette University Dental School in 1978 and M.P.H. degree from Boston University School of Public Health in 1982.
