General

Must I be an AAPHD member to participate in Phase I or II?

Yes! Dues are used to help support the chapter's activities, including the selectives. For 2015, AAPHD member dues are $10 and can be given to any member of the AAPHD cabinet. Checks should be made to “AAPHD at UCLA” or you can Venmo “AAPHD Chapter at UCLA” (r_a_m).

Can I participate in only one phase of the selective?

You may take Phase I, the lecture component, on its own. However, in order to participate in Phase II, the research component, you must have completed Phase II.

Can I fill out the application for both phases at the same time?

Yes. The application for the selective requests information for both phases.

Phase I

When does Phase I take place?

Phase I takes place during the spring quarter each year.

How many presentations are there and how long will each last?

Approximately six guest speakers will be speaking over the course of Phase I. Each speaker is scheduled to speak around 1-1.5 hours.

When are the presentations held for Phase I?

We aim for Wednedays from 5:30-7:00pm, but we will be flexible if necessary to accommodate our speakers. A schedule (and relevant updates) will be sent to participants via email prior to the commencement of Phase I.

What will we be learning about?

Speakers will share their educational and professional experiences in the realm of

dental public health. New speakers are invited each year to introduce Phase I participants to the wide variety of opportunities and experiences available in the field. Click HERE for information on past speakers.

What if I need to miss a lecture?

Please note that all lectures are MANDATORY and a reflection assignment must be

completed and turned in before the end of each session (these will also serve as attendance). If a lecture must be missed, you must notify the selective coordinators ASAP and if excused, a makeup assignment will be made available. Failure to comply will result in dismissal from the course and selective credits will not be awarded

Phase II

Can I present research I have already completed?

No, we prefer that you conduct a new DPH-related study/review. We hope that Phase I will inspire enthusiasm and ingenuity.

When can I start conducting my research?

We encourage Phase II participants to start developing their ideas during Phase I.

Should I come up with a research topic before the application process or can I come up with it later when I get selected?

We understand that some students may already have a research topic in mind, while others may not. Topics may also change during Phase I. That is okay!
